Training on Norovirus and Hepatitis A virus detection (17 - 28 March 2014)

The training sessions in the framework of CAPS2 project continue at the IZSAM laboratories of Teramo, with the arrival of more experts from the project partners intitutions.

From 17 to 28 March 2014, in fact two virologists from the Food Safety and Veterinary Institute in Albania attended a training period on Norovirus and Hepatitis A virus detection.

During the training period the two virologists have been able to explore different topics: classical virology, sample preparation, Real time RT -PCR for HAV and Norovirus and then they could try what they learned with tests and practical activities in lab, in order to implement analytical methods on Norovirus, Hepatitis A virus detection and identification in seafood and joint development of innovative molecular methods.

All the trainings provided by the project CAPS2 aim to standardize laboratory procedures for all institutions involved, provide analytical tools aimed at reaching the final goal of strengthening surveillance of seafood contaminations in the Adriatic area by spreading advanced technology and knowledge to Adriatic laboratories and by creating networks relavant among Competent Authorities and stakeholders.

Sanitary survey in Bosnia and Herzegovina

As planned in the action 5.3 of the project CAPS2, the Croatian Veterinary Institute and the Veterinary Office of Bosnia and Herzegovina have conducted, from 17 to 18 February 2014, a sanitary survey in the coastal town of Neum in Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the first day of survey, the shellfish farms were officially visited. After having collected all information and data, two production areas were identified. Permanent sampling points for the monitoring of bio-toxins and phytoplankton composition of seawater and its geographical coordinates were defined. Moreover the points for the tests on heavy metals, benzo(a)pyrene and other PAH and monitoring of microbiological quality (E. coli) of bivalve shellfish were also identified.

On 18th February 2014, Eddy Listeš, as project coordinator of CAPS2 introduced the overall description of the project, with particular reference to the future national monitoring plan and its implementation to local breeders, food business operators and local veterinary inspector.

The final aim is to establish a national plan in Bosnia and Herzegovina for monitoring the seawater and bivalve shellfish quality in production areas and relaying areas for live bivalve shellfish.

Training on Heavy metals (3 - 7 March 2014)

A second session of training period on heavy metals has taken place in IZSAM laboratories for other CAPS2 partners representatives.

Two technicians from Croatian Veterinary Institute of Split and one from Centre of Ecotoxicological Research of Montenegro were trained in Chemistry Unit from 3 to 7 March 2014.

After a previous theorical explanation in the classroom, they followed IZSAM experts in laboratories to continue to work testing the practical procedures.

In the framework of CAPS2 project, every training period is created according single needs of the participants after having submitted a questionnaire which higlighted the level of knowledge and expertise.

In this way, the training provided by CAPS2 covers a various range of topics and levels, with the general aim to harmonize the preparation of all operators involved in the testing laboratories of the Countries bordering the Adriatic Sea and analyzing seafood products.

Training on Norovirus and Hepatitis A virus (24 - 28 February 2014)

With reference to the Work Package 3 “Strengthening diagnostic services” of the CAPS2 project, the first training period on Norovirus and Hepatitis A virus detection was held from 24 to 28 February 2014 at Virology Unit of IZSAM “G. Caporale" , Teramo, Italy. Two experts coming from Croatian Veterinary Institute attended the training period in order to improve analytical methods on virus in seafood i.e. Virus isolation and Real time RT-PCR for HAV and Norovirus. The contents will be further analyzed in depth during the second phase of the training that will be held on May 2014.

The overall quality and safety of the fishery products in the whole Adriatic area will be improved by working together to enhance diagnostic capabilities among cross-border Adriatic Countries.

Training on Heavy metals (17-21 February 2014)

According to the CAPS2 training plan, from 17 to 21 February 2014 two technicians of the Food Safety and Veterinary Institute (Albania) and two coming from the Veterinary Faculty of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) attended a training period on heavy metals determination in fish and shellfish in IZSAM “G. Caporale" laboratories, Teramo, Italy.

The study period included theoretic training sessions and practical activities in labs; moreover the training period was the occasion to promote the exchange of knowledge among technicians of CAPS2 partner laboratories,  encouraging sharing experiences and the establishment of a very concrete professional relation among them.
