May 2014: two important events for the CAPS2 project

The project CAPS2 is now at an intermediate phase of execution. Project partners are strengthening their dialogue and cooperation and project activities are ongoing.

May 2014 was a crucial month for the project itself. Two different events were organized in Teramo, Italy, in the framework of CAPS2: on 27-28 May, 2014 the majority of project partners met each other in the Third Steering Committee Meeting, followed by one day of Interim Seminar on 29 May, 2014.

Both events took place at the International Centre for Veterinary Training and Information “F. Gramenzi” of Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell’Abruzzo e del Molise “G. Caporale”, located in Teramo, Italy (

The Steering Committee Meeting was the opportunity to discuss the overall project status, explore administrative and managerial aspects to be tackle during the following period of execution, provide a shared overview of the Work Packages delivery, relevant achievements and project changes required.

The CAPS2 Interim seminar, held on 29 May 2014, constituted another crucial event for the initiative co-funded by the European Union, Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance. In the event, open to project partner delegates, partner Countries experts and other relevant stakeholders, CAPS2 interim activities were presented in detail to disseminate preliminary achievements and perspective. At the same time, the event represented an opportunity to offer an overview of safety and surveillance in the aquaculture sector as concerns Italy and other involved countries of the Adriatic Areas.

The seminar, hosting experts from different Italian public health institutions, was an occasion to know more about the European legislative framework, as concerns safety and surveillance of the aquaculture sector, learn about relevant initiatives concerning management and classification of areas of production of mollusks and get to know relevant activities and preliminary achievements of the CAPS2 project.

These two events were important to underpin scope, objectives of the CAPS2 and give a further impulse to communication and networking among relevant actors involved in this Adriatic cooperation initiative.

CAPS2 at the event “Towards 2020 – Adriatic Sea, Ionian Sea and the Aichi targets”

From 2nd to 4th June 2014, at Pineto - Silvi (Abruzzo Region, Italy), the MPA Torre del Cerrano organized the AdriaPAN meeting titled “Towards 2020”, the last one in the framework of the PANforAMaR project (Protected Areas Network for Adriatic and Ionian Macro Region) promoted by the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative.

“Towards 2020” is inspired to the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity 2011-2020, adopted during the 10th meeting of the “Conference of Parties - Convention on Biological Diversity” (October 2010, Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan). The Plan also includes 20 ambitious yet achievable biodiversity targets, collectively known as the Aichi Targets (, aiming at inspiring broad-based action in support of biodiversity.

The three days event was attended by over 250 representatives from institutions, universities and research centers coming from Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Albania and Greece. Overall aim was the establishment of an ecological network of MPAs in the Adriatic and Ionian Sea, as part of the objective that all world countries gave in 2010 in Nagoya (Japan): the protection of at least 10 percent of coastal and marine areas by 2020 (target no 11).

Among the numerous scientific dissertations, CAPS2 was introduced by Dr. Ferri and Dr. Di Giacinto belonging to the IZSAM, Italian partner of the project. Partnership, objectives and activities were detailed in order to share project experience with all attendees. The discussion focused on the potential impact of the project in terms of environmental and economic benefits for the whole Adriatic area, by contributing to the new European septennial programme 2014 – 2020.

The participation to this Adriatic event fits with the CAPS2 communication strategy, aimed at generating a shared and consensual approach towards themes and objectives of the project, promoting also the involvement of other actors and stakeholders.
