Training period on benzopyrene and other PAH detection (6 - 10 October 2014)

One representative of Centre for ecotoxicological research - Podgorica (Montenegro) and four representatives of Croatian Veterinary Institute (Croatia) attended a training period on benzopyrene and other PAH detection at IZSAM Chemistry Laboratory from 6 to 10 October 2014.

One of the specific objectives of this project, titled “Strengthening of Centres of Aquaculture production and Safety surveillance in Adriatic Cross-border Countries”, is the reinforcement of the diagnostic capabilities and know-how in relation to heavy metals, benzopyrene and other Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) and biotoxins contamination of fish and shellfish produced in the Adriatic sea due to scheduled training period.

After a short presentation of working programme and administrative issues, during the following days the trainees practiced activities in IZSAM laboratory in different fields in order to implement analytical methods for the diagnosis of marine fish and shellfish diseases and check health standards for live mollusks and the second training period on benzopyrene.

This event was important to improve partecipants' knowledge on relevant legislative requirements and to learn how to apply HPLC-FLUO analysis and methods validation.

Training period on Biotoxins detection (22- 26 September 2014)

The CAPS2 training session at IZSAM are a favourable tool in the hands of partner to learn and improve the issues that the project faces.

Four experts from the Croatian Veterinary Institute of Rijeka and two from the Centre for Ecotoxicological Research of Montenegro attended at IZSAM Chemistry Unit in Teramo, from 22 to 26 September 2014, the training on the reinforcement of the diagnostic capabilities and know-how in relation to heavy metals, benzopyrene and other Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) and biotoxins contamination of fish and shellfish produced in the Adriatic sea.

The trainees were introduced with the description of working programme, the administrative issues and other recaps.

During the afternoon and the following days the training continued in the laboratories.

The training was focused on the implement of analytical methods for the diagnosis of marine fish and shellfish diseases and check health standards for live mollusks (EU Regulation 853/2004).

The exchange of knowledge and training activities promoted according to CAPS2 are creating an important laboratories and experts’ network in Adriatic Cross - Border countries.

Training period on Vibrio spp. detection (22- 26 September 2014)

From the 22nd to 26th of September 2014, two experts from the Croatian Veterinary Institute of Rijeka attended at IZSAM of Teramo a training session Food Hygiene Unitof IZSAM of Teramo.

The training’s aim was the development of knowledge and skills in order to apply innovative molecular methods for the identification of pathogenic determinants in Vibrio spp. strains isolated from seafood.

After a short presentation of working programme and administrative issues, trainees could practice in the laboratory the issues covered: biochemical and molecular methods for Vibrio spp. detection; quality management system (QMS) in the lab and approach for validate a PCR protocol.

The event was important to strengthen opportunities and objectives and give a further impulse to communication and networking among relevant actors involved in this Adriatic cooperation initiative.

Training period on Vibrio spp. detection (15 - 19 September 2014)

From 15 to 19 September 2014k, two representatives of Croatian Veterinary Institute of Split visited IZSAM laboratories to attend a training period on Vibrio spp. Detection.

The training involved Food Hygiene Unit of IZSAM, where they  could learn relevant elements of the molecular methods for Vibrio spp. detection and quality controls associated to a PCR protocol, the ISO regulating the approach for the 3 estimation of measurement uncertainty and  also gain more knowledge on Vibrio parahaemolyticus virulence genes detection.

After a general introduction in class room, the trainees moved in lab and they have been trained on

ISO 21872/2007 and multiplex PCR Vibrio spp. detection, focusing on sample preparation, quality controls, microbiology of food and animal feeding stuffs,  Vibrio spp. biochemical confirmation tests and results, DNA extraction from suspected, global approach for the estimation of measurement uncertainty and reproducibility standard deviation and expression of measurement uncertainty.

Training on Benzopyrene and other PAHs (8 - 12 September 2014)

Two representatives of Veterinary Faculty of Sarajevo (Bosnia-Herzegovina) and two from the Food Safety and Veterinary Institute of Tirana (Albania) attended a training period on benzopyrene and other PAH detection at IZSAM Chemistry Laboratory from 8 to 12 September 2014.

The technician studied in deep the topic focusing on review of the EU Legislation related to the determination of benzopyrene and other PAHs in food samples and on statistical approach to validation parameters for PAHs.

They carried out the activities in the lab and prepared a validation dossier.

CAPS2 training is an important moment to learn knowledge and skills to implement standard procedures.
