Strengthening of Centres for Aquaculture production and Safety surveillance in Adriatic Cross-border Countries

CAPS2-Strengthening of Centres for Aquaculture Production and Safety surveillance in the Adriatic cross-border Countries is a cooperation project funded in the framework of the Adriatic IPA CBC 2007-2013 Programme of the European Union.
Five countries, bordering the Adriatic Sea, are involved in the CAPS2 initiative and cooperate to improve surveillance of the aquaculture and fishery sectors in this geographical area.
The project aims to strengthen diagnostic capabilities of contamination of fish and shellfish, improving know how and diagnostic tools of project partner laboratories.
Research activities in the Adriatic Area are also encouraged since a transfer of innovative surveillance and information systems is foreseen among relevant stakeholders and different operators in the aquaculture and fishery sectors.
Cooperation among project beneficiaries aims to contribute to the harmonization of surveillance and controls on sea and aquaculture products, for a common quality standard level in food safety to finally benefit citizens of the Adriatic Area.
CAPS2 project aims to provide main specific technologies and operational capabilities to a higher numbers of laboratories than the previous partners, which will be adequately equipped and well acknowledged for assuring a better policy for the surveillance of fish and mollusc safety conditions. The alignment to the EU sectorial legislation will be guarantee being a main target of the project as well as the attention to adopt innovative technologies and validated methods i.e. biotoxins contamination chemical detection. In addition, the implementation of a web GIS application at single national level and at supranational level, for the surveillance of fish and mollusc safety conditions in Adriatic Area could allow the collection and analysis of data on shellfish bacteriological, chemical and toxicological contaminations. This permits to cover a very wide range of identification of the existing main mollusc species contaminated and consequently to refine the national surveillance plans on shellfish and mollusc production areas. Consequently the project aims at involving not only national laboratories but also competent authorities in order to apply new knowledge to national surveillance plans.

CAPS2 is one of the project financed within the 2nd ordinary call of IPA Adriatic CBC Programme. The latter has been designed under the objectives of the cross-border cooperation of the Instrument for Pre-accession Assistance of the European Union.
It is the result of joint programming work, carried out by the relevant participating countries, and is part of the cooperation process in the Adriatic area.
